Game of The Year 2015

It’s finally here, the big goat or something? Game of the Year can mean many things, to Matthew and Kyle it’s a game that does something special, but not necessarily perfectly. Perhaps that means games that step into uncharted waters and return triumphant, or titles that scale the mountains of others before them to reach new heights of excellence. Whichever its nature, 2015 delivered a lot of potentials; Rise of the Tomb Raider, Splatoon, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and the list doesn’t end there!

Kyle and Matthew celebrate some of their favourite videogame soundtracks of the year, from titles like; Destiny The Taken King, Persona 4 Dancing All Night, and Halo 5: Guardians, to name but a few. This award is all about the music and how well it gels with the rest of the experience. Naturally, we don’t own any of the game music sampled within and are not profiting from it.

This Week In Videogames – 20/12/2015

The videogame industry brought a dose of festive cheer this week, in the form of one huge announcement (the tree), peppered with some smaller releases (the baubles), oh and then there’s Destiny (the coal-filled stocking). Take a looksee!

Review – Rise of the Tomb Raider

You wouldn’t believe how many times Lara forgot to jump over spike pits, drowned in depths of submerged caves, and had murderous run-ins with woodland predators who exhibited an unhealthy fascination with her throat, over the course of this review process. No, I totally was not the one at fault here; my gameplay was flawless throughout, but feel free to donate whatever ancient Byzantine coins you can spare to her recovery fund…

This Week In Videogames – 13/12/2015

Admittedly, there isn’t much ‘news’ in my slight rant about Gamestop’s inconvenient business practices, but the rest of it is mostly on point, mostly. We’ve got stories of titles great and terrible this week, dig in!

Dropping In - Rainbow Six Siege

What’s more noble than saving a helpless civilian from the clutches of terrorists? Saving them from yourself… Matthew and Kyle suit up and slot bad guys in the relatively narrow confines of the inexplicably grounded and abandoned Air Force One, in Rainbow Six Siege on the Xbox One.

11 December, 2015

Review – Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

Did someone say FAMAS? Not to spoil my review that I would encourage you to read in full, but I was tempted to make the argument that the FAMAS (the gun I force myself to use in every game) is the only redeeming element of Rainbow Six Siege. In all fairness though, even that’s not fun.

Battlefront's Battle of Jakku Is A Well-Timed Blast

Star Wars: Battlefront’s first free downloadable content, Battle of Jakku, has rolled out for the players who pre-ordered, like myself. Here’s my thoughts having playing a bunch of the new content, with the added bonus of a short discussion of how I feel Battle of Jakku fairs when held up against Halo 5’s recent free update.

Whoop! Whoop! That’s the sound of da police! And in this case ‘da police' happen to be Stormtroopers, and they really aren’t happy to have their cargo stolen. The guys check out Star Wars: Battlefront’s Cargo game mode, on the Xbox One, all that’s missing is the fluttering trail of cash.

Compressed ghosts, big explosions, and ‘Gouache’ – whatever the hell that is – it’s Sunday again which means it’s time for our weekly roundup of videogame news stories. Review – Star Wars: Battlefront

There’s a palpable glee, a joy that only the white of a Stormtrooper’s armour, or the hard angles of an Imperial Star Destroyer can evoke in me, and those are two things Star War: Battlefront packs in abundance. I have made no secret of my addiction to (most things) Star Wars and that’s a double-edged sword I think; yes, it has a certain thematic advantage over my tastes, but when it is done a disservice few people are better placed to decry it. What will Battlefront’s flavour be I wonder; the sweet zest of glee or the sour tang of disappointment?

Dropping In – Star Wars: Battlefront, Fighter Squadron

The guys take a pass over the wastes of Tatooine to bulls-eye Womp Rats… Metaphoric Womp Rats that is, because they aren’t flying a T-16, no, the TIE Interceptor is a far more beautiful craft, and X-Wings such enjoyable prey. It’s Star Wars: Battlefront’s Fighter Squadron in all its glory.

Dropping In – Mordheim: City of the Damned

Though ill-advised, Kyle and Matthew gorge in Wyrdstone and take to the hell-warped streets of Mordheim, hunger not yet sated. Mordheim is a PC Early Access adaptation of the classic Games Workshop table top game of the same name, its due to release in full any day now.

Review – Fallout 4

Stock up on Rad-Away and invest in a suit of T-51 Power Armour because it’s time to venture out onto the wasteland and it’s packed full of more rabid denizens than ever before. Yes, it’s Fallout 4 one of the games I least wanted to play this year, bearing that in mind my thoughts on its quality may well surprise you.

Dropping In - Fallout 4

The guys drop into the rad-ruined wasteland of Boston to... Arrange chairs? Matthew and Kyle exchange stories of their respective journeys through the behemoth known as Fallout 4, demonstrating the settlement building system, use of Power Armour, and of course unleash VATs on a den of hapless ghouls.

Dropping In - Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Kyle and Matthew ditch their limbs and go full robo as they bring war to the surprisingly high-tech gangs of Singapore’s slums, in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, played on the Xbox One.

This Week In Videogames – 15/11/2015

There too many videogames, too many I say! I tore myself away from the wasteland of Boston and the battlefields in a galaxy far, far away to bring you this week’s news. Almost a week of frantic third-person shooting has ensured that each word was typed with cramped fingers and pained wrists, enjoy.

SW:TOR, Knights of the Fallen Empire, Chapter II A Dream Of Empire

Having wrestled control of the Eternal Throne from his father, Arcann pinned the ‘tragedy’ on Ravanor and as all the best villains do, he froze our unconscious hero in carbonite and poorly at that. It’s Chapter II of the Knights of the Fallen Empire!

Review – Call of Duty: Black Ops III

You know I was alright with wearing a strength boosting exosuit to wage war on behalf of my corporate overlords, but having my limbs replaced is maybe a little far. Dropping In – Halo 5: Guardians

The guys drop into a match of the new bittersweet game mode called Warzone in Halo 5: Guardians, and it immediately becomes apparent that each has wildly different priorities when it comes to gauging the quality of said videogame.

03 November, 2015

Dropping In - Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Matthew joins Kyle for a gander around old Victorian London in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, on the PlayStation 4. The guys undertake an assassination mission and show of how the optional side objectives can affect your approach. It is only proper to give a mild spoiler warning, although the target is Lucy Thorne, a woman who literally wears a Templar symbol on her arm, there’s really no surprises here.

Review – Halo 5: Guardians

Never has there been so much ONI in a Halo game before; slick, black, and manipulative the word is never far from lips in the campaign and somehow it has even managed to worm itself into the multiplayer too. If that’s not reason enough to pick up Halo 5: Guardians then I guess you should check out the rest of the review?

SW:TOR, Knights of the Fallen Empire, Chapter I The Hunt

Now that the Knights of the Fallen Empire has released for all subscribers and enough time has passed that I don’t feel bad about talking spoilers, we’re going to do exactly that! As I explained in yesterday’s prologue, I’ll be recounting the journey of Ravanor, my original character, in a somewhat dramatic, screenshot-heavy form.

SW:TOR, Knights of the Fallen Empire, Prologue

The release of Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion of Star Wars: The Old Republic ensures I’m afraid a continuation of our Star Wars coverage – it’ll probably bring this site to ruin, but damn it’s fun to write about. My plan is to write something about each of the expansion’s chapters, nine of which have been released, with more coming as episodic releases in the future. In short, I’ll chronicle the journey of Ravanor, my original character, created during the vanilla game’s early access period almost four years ago. There will be spoilers; in fact it will all be spoilers, of both the old content, including the class stories, as well as the new chapters, but hopefully it will make for an interesting read. If nothing else, it’s my latest experiment and who doesn’t love experiments?

Review – Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

You really never know what you’re getting when it comes to the Assassin’s Creed series; a Black Flag or Brotherhood, or a Revelations or 3, of course I’ve reserved Unity a category all of its own, though I don’t suspect Ubisoft will allow a game in that state to slip onto shelves again anytime soon. It has got to be an up year surely?

This Week In Videogames – 25/10/2015

Dropcast 30 - Vandenberghe

Mod Watch – Star Wars: Empire At War: FoC, Legacy Era

We reach the furthest point along the now renounced Star Wars canon as we delve into the Legacy Era; a time when new Star Destroyers look more archaic than their ancient predecessors, and the Jedi have been erased once more. It’s a good time to be Imperial again.

This Week In Videogames – 18/10/2015

Keep all children and pets securely locked in doors and remember to turn off all your electronics at the sockets, because videogames are coming! I feel like I may have stated something similar back when Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launched last month… But I mean it for real this time, the coming weeks see the releases of Halo 5, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and (most importantly, obviously) Knights of the Fallen Empire! Still we're getting ahead of ourselves, let’s stay grounded and recount the last week of videogames.

Mod Watch – Star Wars: Empire At War: FoC, Galactic Civil War Era

This is it, the catalyst. It all began here. This is the mod that sparked my recent Star Wars obsession, which even months removed from its discovery continues to fan my self-destructive flames. This is Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War, the mod that demanded far more of my time than any other game released this year.

Review - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The Phantom Pain is the kind of game that I just can’t help but talk about, there’s so much going on here; core gameplay, mechanics, narrative, it’s all so different from the industry norm. It’s because of that, the time needed to properly digest the story, and my own reluctance to proofread this volume of text, that this review is so tardy. While I’ve endeavoured to not spoil anything related to the plot or characters, I do discuss the quality of the game’s later hours in some detail, and spoil parts of Ground Zeroes, the game that sets up The Phantom Pain.

This Week In Videogames – 13/09/2015

When my Twitter feed is littered with the same meaningless hash tag it usually indicates one of three things; a tragedy has befallen the United States, a videogame has released and the publisher is retweeting every somewhat positive comment, or a sports event happening. Oddly though, #NationalVideoGameDay appears to be something else entirely, something far darker, and almost certainly American. I’m expecting society to collapse in on itself sometime within the next few hours, so enjoy this week’s news while you can!
