Chapter V From The Grave

The spectral visage of the late Emperor Valkorion visited Ravanor in the brooding core of the Gravestone, he stayed only long enough to reaffirm partnership, promising that his power will be Ravanor’s to call upon when needed. Their reunion is cut short when Arcann’s Skytroopers begin their assault.

Ravanor blasted through the Skytrooper vanguard with all the style of a dashing rogue, paired with the militaristic precision that only the Empire’s finest can boast. Having rendezvoused with his companions, the team spilt up; Koth and HK-55 are tasked with getting the Gravestone airborne, while Ravanor and Lana see to their unwelcome guests who are dropping thick and fast in the swamp beyond.

As they emerged into the wild once more, Zakuulan drop ships strafed overhead, disgorging their relentless payload of battle droids. They surged towards the defenders, an unflinching tide of metal and death. But before they could overwhelm, a speeder speared their formation, it shot from the jungle growth to explode into a raging fireball, leaving only a lone Knight of Zakuul in its wake; Senya.

Older, more refined, and possessing a regal beauty, Senya batted aside Ravanor’s attempt at small talk and readied her weapon, a blue-bladed lightsaber, for the battle to come. A prudent move, for hot on her armoured heels was a large detachment of Knights, the Eternal Empire’s elite Force-users. Led by one captain Draynon Artus, they did not come unprepared, their attack was bolstered by Skytroopers and a towering bi-pedal walker.

Despite downing both the captain and his walker support, not to mention a sizable contingent of his Knights, the three defenders found themselves outmatched and trapped, as Knights of used their telekinetic Force abilities to surround them with debris. True to his word Valkorion returned to existence, he halted time, or at least Ravanor’s perception of it as he did so. Free from the desperate urgency of battle, Valkorion took a moment to bring the precarious nature of their situation to Ravanor’s attention, in particular Lana’s seemingly imminent demise at the hands of a Knight.

Faced with his losing the friend and lover, whom he had only recently been reunited with, Ravanor took the only logical course of action available to him, and surrendered control to Valkorion. He unleashed an explosion of Force energy; it swept aside his unprepared attackers, incapacitating them while it blew harmlessly over his allies.

Granted momentary reprieve, they saw to their escape. Combining their powers, Lana and Senya used the Force to raise the mammoth Gravestone from the swamp and Ravanor was struck by how unspeakably ugly the ship looked. Bulky and tank-like, it possessed none of the angular menace of the Empire’s Harrower-class dreadnaughts, or the sleek elegance of his previous craft, the X-70B Phantom. Yet as far as Ravanor could see, it was the only way out of the swamp that didn’t end with him in stun cuffs.

Free from the cloying grip of the Endless Swamp, Koth gunned the Gravestone’s engines, clearing the atmosphere to be greeted by the gut-clenching sight of the Eternal Fleet, arrayed cross the void before them. At the order of Arcann, the lead elements of the Fleet open fire on the Gravestone.

On the bridge the crew scrabbled to ready the Gravestone for a hyperspace jump, while Ravanor decided to test out the ship’s ancient arsenal in an attempt to buy them some time. Though the result did far more than that…

The body of the Gravestone unfolded as it readied itself to unleash its devastating main cannon. It was a beam weapon of unbelievable power, whose destruction cascaded and obliterated more than two dozen ships in a single shot. The blast sent the Eternal Fleet reeling and exposed a hole in their formation, bruised but unbowed the Gravestone made the jump to hyperspace.

Back on the bridge Koth announced their destination, ‘Asylum’, a spot where they can lay low and make repairs. Despite escaping near death, Koth and Senya, who apparently have some history, launched into tirade of accusations and mistrust before withdrawing to opposite ends of the ship; Senya was one of the Knights who pursued Koth after his desertion.

Though he feared that she would seek to renew their earlier conversation, concerning his new found power, Ravanor went in search of Lana, and found her hurling Force lightning at dismembered Skytrooper.  Of course, she asked about his burst of power in the battle in the swamp outside of the ship, and Ravanor could only answer with lies, he brushed it aside, and posited that it could be the power of the Gravestone itself. Through no insignificant amount of smooth talk, Ravanor guided the conversation away, into a far more intimate direction. The first kiss since their reunion was snatched away however, by the fumbling and one-hundred per cent staged appearance of Koth Vortena, it was all Ravanor could do not to draw his blaster pistol and remove the irritant entirely.

Mood shattered, Ravanor stalked off in search of Koth, who succeeded in annoying him yet further. Relentless in his belief in fate, destiny, and the Gravestone, Koth states in no uncertain terms that the ship is what will save the galaxy, not people like Ravanor or indeed Senya. Further conversation made Koth’s feelings for Lana clear and Ravanor pressed him on the point, and managed to get an apology for his earlier interruption.

Trigger finger still itching, Ravanor left to find more agreeable company, which he admitted could be anyone other than Koth. After a brief interaction with HK, he found his newest ally, Senya in the Gravestone’s eerie core.

His talk with Senya was illuminating, she appeared to be the most reasonable Force user Ravanor has ever met; not crazed or self-absorbed like the Sith, nor self-righteous and delusional like the Jedi. She is a Knight, but that doesn’t define her, and she’s cognisant of that fact.  Senya asked why Ravanor was opposing Arcann and he replied by telling her he was doing so to save the galaxy. It was at least partially true; he was fighting to save his small part of it, and the Empire, if it at all possible.

As the chapter drew to a close, it cut to a twilight scene at a camp on an unnamed planet, a hooded woman meditated by a camp fire. She talked of the Emperor, how she sensed him but not as she had in the past. The woman, though aged, was none other than Jedi Grandmaster Satele Shan, and she wasn’t alone, for beside her stood the Force ghost of Darth Marr.
