This Week In Videogames – 17/04/2016

We cap off the week with a dip in the news pond, it’s a short dip I’m afraid, but as is true of most weeks’, it’s one the Warhammer enthusiast won’t want to miss.

Going Up To The Big AT-AT Farm In The Sky

EA discussed continuation of free content in Star Wars: Battlefront; more in-game events and double XP weekends obviously, but more crucially new Hutt Contracts including the ‘Berserker Trait’, ‘Bacta Bomb’, and ‘Ion Neutralizer’, and some May the 4th special activities. Most exciting of all, some new content surprises, of which we know only the following:
“We also have a couple of surprises in store that we know our fans have been looking for, especially those who have been clamoring for ways to have more options to enjoy Star Wars Battlefront offline. More to come soon.”
The second expansion pack, Bespin, will land in June for season pass owners:
“We’re taking players in and around Cloud City, with four new maps for all of our most popular modes. You’ll see AT-ATs in Cloud City, take to the skies in Fighter Squadron, and even spend time in a carbonite chamber. Of course, we’re also adding more blasters and Star Cards, a new game mode, and two new iconic characters we’re really excited about – Lando Calrissian and the cold-blooded bounty hunter, Dengar.”

Not to be outdone in the DLC space, Creative Assembly outlined their extensive contents plans for Total War: Warhammer, which to my eye seems to be the largest post launch effort they might have ever done. During this announcement they decided to remind the public that Total War: Warhammer is but the first step in a trilogy – news to me!

This Week In Videogames – 17/04/2016 total war warhammer free dlc

Above you can see planned line-up of free content. It is worth noting that ‘legendary lords’ are named characters with quest chains, and perhaps the most surprising item in the list is the free race – Warhammer isn’t Rome, the races are not all cultural variations of humans, though there are certainly a few of other human factions not included in the base game.

Lord packs will be among the purchasable DLC, bolstering existing races they typically contain:
“2 new playable Legendary Lords with their own narrative quest chains, campaign bonuses and quest items.
2 new Lords to serve as generals.
A new unique Unit.
New elite Units of Renown*.
‘Units of Renown’ are elite versions of otherwise already existing units. They might have upgraded stats, different arms or armour, or an unusual ability or two. Typically they’ll reflect the theme of the Pack, probably having been instrumental in the conflict. Given their power and rarity, you might only be able to field one unit of them at a time, or they may be subject to other restrictions.”
There will also be race packs, making existing races – let’s say the Bretonnians – playable, with full rosters, or adding entirely new races. These packs will likely feature:
“A new playable Race added to the Grand Campaign and Multiplayer game.
New Legendary Lords with their own narrative quest chains, campaign bonuses and quest items.
New Lords to serve as generals.
New Race-specific Heroes (where applicable).
New magic items and mounts.
Race-specific unique Units.
Race-specific building, technology and skill trees.”
And the biggest of all, campaign packs, which will add a new race to the Grand Campaign, in addition to a ‘Challenge Campaign’:
“A new Challenge Campaign featuring the Pack’s new Race; a self-contained mini-campaign, with a set of escalating victory conditions to suit both new and very experienced veteran players alike.
Adds a new playable Race to the Grand Campaign and Multiplayer game.
New Legendary Lords with their own narrative quest chains, campaign bonuses and quest items.
New Race-specific Heroes.
New Lords to serve as generals.
New magic items and mounts.
New Race-specific, unique Units.
New Race-specific building, technology and skill trees.”
Total War: Warhammer lands on PC on the 24th of May, slap bang in the middle of my degree’s final exams… Featuring the Orcs, Empire, Vampire Counts, and Dwarves, with Chaos free to those who preorder. The trailer below showcases the realms of those races, on the campaign and battle maps.

This Tree Was My Everything, Dom

The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta on the Xbox One begins April 18th for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition owners, April 25th for everyone else, and to celebrate The Coalition released the ‘Tomorrow’ trailer.

Say what you will about the Gears of War story, but Karen Traviss brought some much needed character to Gears 3, and the books, character I’m not convinced JD Fenix seems to possess.

Strife From The Clouds

Xbox console exclusive no longer, EA and Respawn released Titanfall 2’s first trailer, and while it may be less than a minute long, I doubt could it could have had a single cooler reveal, check it out...

We’ll see more on June 12th, the date of EA’s not-quite-E3 press event, but we do know it’s coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Hot Cash

Knights of the Fallen Empire’s next chapter, XIII Plunder and Profit releases May 5th, featuring Gault and Vette and a whole mess of Zakuulan spoils.
