Tales From The Crypt – Part 3, The Deadly Death Throes of Van Kruger

Fuelled by the blood and flesh of mortals once more, Mannfred von Carstein continued to subjugate the undead strays of Sylvania,  but he was by no means unopposed…

The Deadly Death Throes of Van Kruger

Empowered by the elixir that was the blood of men, von Carstein seized Waldenhof, on the edge of Hel Fenn, with little difficulty. Van Kruger was unwilling to relinquish eastern Sylvania so easily however, marshalling his forces he attacked the recently conquered Eschen, and sacked and looted all he found.

To the north and south, von Carstein and his lieutenants gathered their strength and made ready for battle.  The Winds of Magic shifted and dwarves skulked around the foothills south of Drakenhof. Surprisingly, Van Kruger had the gall to request a peace treaty, by answer von Carstein marched his armies on Castle Templehof, where van Kruger’s far stronger force lay in wait.

Von Carstein took advantage of the enemy’s disorganisation, as he had at Eschen. He ordered his faster bestial units to trample the van Kruger’s smaller force, while the bulk of his host moved to intercept the main enemy force and trap them between bogs. Over the hillocks, von Carstein’s reinforcements raced to join their undead brethren.

The enemy main force advanced swiftly and von Carstein’s reinforcements moved to hold the enemy in the disadvantageous swamp.

In the skies fell bats swarmed and clawed at one another, and as van Kruger’s vargheists fell upon the skeletal ranks, von Carstein’s frothing dire wolves pounced, supporting the mighty varghulf.

Battle was joined in earnest, all warriors closed on one another on bog’s edge and passage of dry land, a brutal and unmoving fight. Only van Kruger himself shirked combat.

The varghulf was able to break the enemy line, allowing the diminished but no less savage dire wolves to pour through. Von Carstein set the beasts upon van Kruger, who seeing the danger, rushed to submerge himself in the mass of his thralls.

In time though, it became evident the tide was turning in van Kruger’s favour, it was a subtle thing at first; a slow grinding of von Carnstein’s ranks that grew into a feverish gnawing. It was the grave guard that were his undoing, von Carstein saw as he retreated into the depthless shadows, not even the mighty varghulf could break their ranks.

It was a sweet sting, this defeat, a necessary reminder. Another offence too, that van Kruger would be made to suffer for, in time.
