This Week In Videogames – 18/07/2016

We travel to a galaxy far far away for almost all of our news this week, because Disney and EA are striking on all fronts. And yes, I suppose I should just accept that Monday is now our news roundup day – Sundays have gotten busy all of a sudden!

Star Stuff

Let’s begin with the media behemoth Star Wars. EA was of course present at the Star Wars Celebration this week, during which director Amy Hennig (of the original Uncharted trilogy), discussed somewhat vaguely the direction of the project she’s overseeing:
"We're creating an all-new Star Wars story with new characters, and it's important that we honour it […] We want you to finish playing the game and feel like you just saw a really good Star Wars movie.
The difference between Star Wars and Indiana Jones is that there aren't side characters, there are co-protagonists, and so the same thing is true of our game [...] They only escape the Death Star because everyone does their part in parallel. The challenge for us then is how do we enable that in gameplay."

The Death Star is the next front of battle in Star Wars: Battlefront and it’s arriving this September. The teaser trailer below shows space combat and trench runs, the new heroes will be Chewbacca and Bossk, and there will naturally be a selection of Death Star-themed maps and new blasters and star cards.

The final expansion promised to season pass owners will be Rogue One: Scarif, (the beach planet from the upcoming movie) it’s slated for release sometime this holiday.

Skirmish mode is releasing July 21st, enabling offline solo and spilt screen co-op (only on consoles) play of Walker Assault and Fighter Squadron. It isn’t clearly how many maps will be playable.

On The Old Republic side, Director of Design James Ohlen dropped the above infographic, which concluded by announcing a new expansion; Knights of the Eternal Throne.

We don’t know much, save its Fall 2016 release date, though there is the following from an interview by Comicbook.com with Ohlen:
“While the full announcement of the expansion, which will include some major details (and spoilers to Fallen Empire) will come later, they wanted to tease it at this event, to let fans know something new was coming around the end of this year.
It has some of the same characters, a lot of new characters […] We’re making the story more epic, and choices more impactful than we have in the past.
[…] a lot of great co-op and multiplayer challenges"
And finally, the Knights of the Fallen Empire’s final chapter has been pushed back to August 11th (9th for subscribers).

And while it’s not strictly videogame news, I feel we must celebrate the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn to Star Wars official canon. A strategic genius – who was nonetheless foiled every time – Grand Admiral Thrawn was in many ways the jewel in the spotted crown of the old, pre-Disney canon. He’ll be returning in Star Wars Rebels Season 3, voiced by Lars Mikkelsen – Mads Mikkelsen’s brother.

And sometime in 2017 he’ll be resurrected in novel form by Timothy Zahn, his original creator – I quite literally didn’t believe it the first time either.
